Farmers are calling for a meeting with the Taoiseach and the Minister for Agriculture over the issue of compensation to beet growers.

Following last week’s negotiations on reforming the EU’s sugar regime, the Irish Farmer’s Association has claimed that they are no longer sure if social partnership is working for them.

They also said that the Brussels deal could sound the death-knell for Ireland's sugar industry.

The IFA’s General Secretary John Dillon said today that the decision to pay off Greencore with a €130m lump sum was ‘unacceptable’.
