Groceries Order expected to be abolished
The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, is expected to recommend to the Cabinet this week that Groceries Order be repealed.
It follows a damning report on the policy by officials at the Department.
Dermot Jewell of the Consumers' Association of Ireland says its abolition would be a positive move for the customer.
“It should introduce a far better element of competition and pricing for consumers’ right across the market, particularly in food products,” he said.
“One other element that is important is ‘off-invoice discounting’ which the consumers never see reflected in reductions in the prices of products should be abolished and it should assist greatly in providing competition and good value for money for consumers.”
