Bank of Ireland has reportedly appointed businessman Denis O'Brien as its deputy governor.

Reports this morning said the 47-year-old, who has already been a member of the bank's court of directors for five years, would take up the new role immediately.

Mr O'Brien is currently being investigated by the Moriarty Tribunal in relation to the manner in which he won the competition for Ireland's lucrative second mobile phone licence in the mid-1990s.

He has also been widely criticised for becoming a tax exile in Portugal, which has allowed him to avoid paying millions of euro to the Irish Exchequer.
