The US government today decided to release oil from its petroleum reserves to help refiners affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The move by President George Bush’s administration is designed to give US refineries near the Gulf of Mexico coast a temporary supply of crude oil to take the place of interrupted shipments from tankers or offshore oil platforms affected by the storm.
