IAWS invests in electrical recycling company

The Irish Agricultural Wholesale Society (IAWS) has reached agreement to invest in TechRec Ireland Limited, a new company established to recycle electrical and electronic equipment.

The investment follows the recent introduction of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulations regarding the disposal of this type of equipment.

TechRec has signed a contract with one of Europe's leading WEEE re-cyclers, Immark AG of Switzerland, to supply and commission a processing plant capable of recycling up to 24,000 tons of WEEE annually into reusable materials for reuse in manufacturing.

The plant will be shipped to Ireland within the coming months and will be fully operational early next year.

TechRec will be Ireland’s first automated WEEE processing plant and will be capable of processing relevant products from all over the island of Ireland.

Philip Lynch, IAWS chief executive, said: “Ireland has been relying on our neighbours to handle our waste problems and the total investment of €5m in the new facility will ensure an opportunity now exists for Irish business and Irish consumers to deal with this, ever growing, waste stream here in Ireland.”
