The Inspector of Prisons has recommended that Irish jails be privatised in an effort to make them more efficient and cost-effective.

In his latest annual report, Justice Dermot Kinlen said privatisation should first be introduced on a trial basis and, if successful, should be adopted throughout the prison service.
