False motor claims keep prices up for Irish consumers

The Irish Insurance Federation said today that false motor insurance claims have accounted for 67% of cases reported to its anti-fraud hotline.

Fraudulent claims have cost the industry an estimated €100m a year.

Michael Horan from the IFF says people are taking action because they are sick of others pushing up their premiums.

He said: "I think consumers are fed up with fraudulent claims and that is why we have had such response to our insurance confidential hotline.

"We have had a lot of good quality information coming into us in the last couple of years and I think there is a greater awareness among people that false or exaggerated claims directly impact on the cost of insurance."
