Footsie falls away from 5000 mark

London shares returned from the holiday weekend in lacklustre form today despite gains by tobacco stocks.

Imperial Tobacco led the FTSE 100 Index risers as investors welcomed the decision of the Court of Session in Edinburgh to reject Margaret McTear’s bid to sue the firm following the death of her husband Alfred from lung cancer in 1993.
