The bid battle for British supermarket group Somerfield took a new twist today when the country’s biggest regional co-operative group entered the fray.

Rochdale-based United Co-operatives, which has 1,000 outlets in the north of England including grocery stores, car dealerships and pharmacies, said it was exploring the possibility of making an offer.
