A new so-called 'datacentre' is to form part of a €160m IDA-backed business park being constructed in Shannon, Co Clare.

The move was announced today by Junior Minister Tony Killeen, who said the new centre was "a decisive first step in ending the digital divide between Dublin and the West of Ireland.

The 'datacentre' will be the first building constructed as part of the Westpark Shannon development close to Shannon Airport.

Westpark said it currently had no tenants for the centre, but was in discussions with a number of interested companies.

The entire Westpark development has the potential to create 1,500 jobs in Shannon when completed.

A further 300 people will be employed during the construction phase.
