Malaysia and Australia will launch negotiations on a free trade agreement, their prime ministers announced.

“We’ve signed a declaration of intent to commence negotiations for a free trade agreement,” Prime Minister John Howard said at a joint conference with his Malaysian counterpart Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Malaysia would become the third member of the Association of South-east Asian Nations to strike such a deal with Australia after Singapore and Thailand.
