EU number-crunchers could target national budgets
The European Commission today proposed giving itself tougher powers to probe national governments’ budget figures.
The controversial plan – which requires approval from EU finance ministers - would allow Commission number-crunchers to carry out “in-depth monitoring visits” in all the member states to verify the fiscal information which national Treasuries report to Brussels.
