Stronger mining stocks were the driving force for the London market today as the FTSE 100 Index finished well above the 4800 barrier.

Forecasts of renewed strength in commodity prices in 2005 were behind the rally by miners, propelling the Footsie up 20.5 points to 4820.8 at the close of trading.
