The FTSE 100 Index overcame a poor start to trading across the Atlantic and a spike in the oil price to return to winning form today.

Gains of nearly 35 points in the first hour of trading were whittled away as the session unfolded, with the Footsie closing only 9.3 points higher at 4742.4.
