ISME hails immigrant labour contribution

The Irish Small and Medium Enterprise association chairman Robert Berney today outlined the increasing importance of migrant labour in order for the economy to achieve and support maximum growth.

He was speaking to delegates at the independent business organisation's annual conference in Enfield, Co Meath today.

Observing that since 1996, 200,000 immigrant workers have entered the State - representing 6% of our total population - he said the country would need in excess of a further 20,000 immigrant workers per annum over the next number of years in order to fill the vacancies that will arise.

"The construction, catering and food processing sectors together with the hospitality sector are almost completely reliant on immigrant labour in order to stay in business" he said.

Mr Berney said while the vast majority of migrant workers enjoy good working conditions, there was evidence in a limited number of cases that migrants were not being afforded the same conditions as other employees.

Mr Berney said: "The message must go out from the Government and the business community that immigrants are truly welcome and will be afforded the same rights and opportunities that exist for Irish people. Small business can play a key role in ensuring that these objectives are achieved".
