Unions plan rally to save Jaguar site

A huge rally is to be held next month as part of a union campaign to save production of Jaguar cars in Coventry, it was announced today.

The event, organised by the Transport and General Workers Union and Amicus, will be held in the city on November 27.

The unions said today they had received strong support to keep production of the luxury vehicles at Coventry’s Browns Lane site.

Tony Woodley, general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union, said: “Coventry has a proud heritage of quality car making and we want to ensure it has a long future.

“We need to show our support for Browns Lane and the future of West Midlands car production at every level and are asking the local community to march with us and bring their families and friends on the 27th.”

Derek Simpson, general secretary of Amicus, said: “Jaguar is synonymous with Coventry and visa versa so I know people will turn out in their thousands to show their support for Browns Lane and for the other Jaguar workers facing redundancy.

“This will be a fantastic show of strength and solidarity against the decision to end Jaguar production in the city.”
