Report: Performing arts contribute €147m to economy

A new report published today estimates that the performing arts contribute €147m to the Irish economy.

The report from Theatre Forum, the voice of performing arts in Ireland, said €37m is indirectly spent by audiences on travel, food, drink and accommodation.

This is the first time in 10 years that a report has shown the economic and socio-economic effects of the performing arts in Ireland.

The 'Economic Impact of the Performing Arts in Ireland' report found that income received by performing arts groups in 2002 was €82m.

The income came via box-office income, sponsorship and donations, State funding as well as sales of bar and food, programme sales and merchandising.

The report also reveals that the industry spent €73m in 2003 on artistic programme costs, salaries and buildings.

The figure also included spending on external services such as printing, advertising, transport, insurance and carpentry.
