Northern Foods is set to close two UK pastry factories with the loss of 1,060 jobs, it was announced today.

The group – best known for Fox’s biscuits, Dalepak frozen foods and Goodfella’s pizzas – revealed plans to shut its plants at Evesham in Worcestershire and London Road, Carlisle, next year.

The proposed move, which follows a cull of 30 senior management jobs already this year, is expected to generate annual savings of £10m (€14.7m).

Northern Foods is the parent company of Green Isle, which manufactures Goodfella's pizzas in Naas, Co Kildare. There are no job cuts planned in the Irish operation, Green Isle said today.
