Asda owner Wal-Mart was today reported to be lining up a £1bn (€1.5bn) takeover bid for discount clothing chain Matalan.

Senior executives of Wal-Mart and their financial advisers at investment bank Lazard were in the UK this month to weigh up an approach, according to the Sunday Express.
