After a positive start this morning, the ISEQ index has fallen 17.52 points to close at 5,184.71 for the day.

After a positive start this morning, the ISEQ index has fallen 17.52 points to close at 5,184.71 for the day.

The main culprits in the index's fall were Elan and CRH.

Shares in CRH tumbled 22c today to €17.84.

The Irish pharmaceutical giant's shares continued their recent slide as they slipped 52c to €13.63.

There was better news for Northern Ireland pharmaceutical Warner Chilcott.

The Craigavon-based company announced strong quarterly results for the period ended June 30, with revenues at $113.9m (€92.8m), an increase of 13% over the same quarter last year. Today Warner Chilcott shares climbed to €8.56, a rise of 21c.

Other major fallers today were Grafton, Kingspan and Paddy Power.

The construction companies both experienced double-digit falls, Grafton moving down 14c to €6.60 and Kingspan going down by 10c to €4.70, while Paddy Power slipped 17c to €9.65.

In the financials, Allied Irish Bank shares have risen 16c to €12.81 while Bank of Ireland shares climbed 14c to €10.79.

However, Irish Life & Permanent and Anglo-Irish Bank were both in the red today going down 4c and 6c to stand at €12.35 and €12.94 respectively.

Iona technologies recorded a rise of 13c to stand at €2.88, while Abbey's shares rose by 7c to close at €8.63.

The main movers today are CRH, AIB, Ryanair, Bank of Ireland and Anglo-Irish Bank.
