Deloitte: Football profits turning the corner

European football clubs and federations now generate more than £7bn (€10.6bn) of income each season, according to Deloitte’s Annual Review of Football Finance, published today.

More than half of this total was generated within the ‘Big Five’ European footballing countries – England, Italy, Germany, Spain and France.

Clubs and federations in these countries generated £3.9bn (€5.9bn) in the 2002/2003 season, up seven per cent on the previous year.

Dan Jones, Partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: “While some commentators have been predicting a collapse in European football finances, the financial reality is that most clubs are turning the corner.

“Revenues continue to grow and wage restraint and a general slowdown in transfer spending are bringing an improvement in the bottom line and club cash flows.”
