Improved advertising and an efficiency drive helped newspaper publisher Trinity Mirror to a 27% rise in half-year profits today.

The group, which has around 250 titles and 11,500 staff, said the figures covering the six months to June 30 showed the strategy of chief executive Sly Bailey was on track.
