Almost 80% of all new vehicle registrations are now made via the online service run by the Revenue Commissioners.

The figure was revealed by the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern at a ceremony to announce the latest Public Service Excellence Awards.

It also emerged that almost half a million business transactions were completed through the Land Registry's Electronic Access Service (EAS) last year.

Both services received government awards today. They were among 20 services to receive awards.
