UN rejects Goodman’s €275m compensation claim

The United Nations has reportedly rejected a €275m compensation claim from Irish beef baron Larry Goodman for financial losses incurred as a result of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1991.

Reports this morning said the UN Compensation Commission had rejected the claim because it was unconvinced that the losses incurred were directly linked to the Kuwait invasion.

Mr Goodman’s companies were owed around €200m for beef supplies to Iraq at the time of the invasion.

In an April 1991 resolution, the UN Security Council said Iraq was liable for any damage caused to “foreign governments, nationals and corporations” as a result of the invasion.
