British shoppers against M&S takeover

Shoppers in Britain have given the thumbs down to a possible takeover of Marks & Spencer by entrepreneur Philip Green, research in the UK showed today.

Almost two-thirds of people polled by research group ICM for magazine Retail Week said new chief executive Stuart Rose should be given time to spark a trading revival.

This was in contrast to 16% of customers who supported Mr Green in his efforts to take over the retailer, while 22% offered no opinion.

Bhs and Arcadia owner Mr Green is currently considering his moves after seeing an approach rejected by the M&S board on Wednesday.
