The UK’s debt crisis is “ebbing” as a result of the country’s strong economy, a debt charity in Britain has said.

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service said since 1999 it had seen a 32% increase in the debt levels of people who came to it for help in the first quarter of this year.

But at the same time it said the number of people who were struggling to keep up with repayment plans, under which creditors agree to suspend interest charges in return for receiving a set amount each month, had fallen to its lowest level since it began collecting figures five years ago.
