INOU welcomes Tesco initiative to recruit long-term unemployed

The Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed has welcomed a decision by supermarket chain Tesco to recruit 100 long-term unemployed people.

The group is encouraging other companies to do likewise and has said this kind of initiative helps wash away the stigma associated with being out of a job.

INOU General Secretary Eric Conroy said over 26,000 Irish people have been unemployed for over a year, and companies should not be afraid of recruiting them.

“There are plenty of good workers out there who should be given a chance. Employers can’t lose out with taking on people in low-grade jobs or high-grade jobs depending on their experience.

"They will be pleasantly surprised how good these people are and they will stay long-term because they want to work and they have good qualifications.”
