NUJ votes against strike at Independent Newspapers

The National Union of Journalists has reportedly voted against strike action at Independent Newspapers as part of a dispute over restructuring plans.

Reports this morning said the union, whose members are not affected by the plan, voted by 104 to 101 against supporting industrial action.

Independent Newspapers is seeking 205 “voluntary” redundancies under the restructuring plan, but has threatened to sack workers if they do not accept the generous packages on offer.

Three other unions representing workers at the company - SIPTU, the TEEU and the GPMU - have already voted in favour of strike action, even though more than 190 workers have already signed up to the redundancy plan.
