All personal injury claims arising from workplace accidents must be referred to the Personal Injuries Assessment Board from June 1, it was announced today.

From this date, any employee who seeks compensation from his or her employer must be referred to PIAB before legal proceedings are issued.

PIAB's remit will be extended to include both public liability and motor accidents involving injury later in the year.

Outlining the timetable for action, PIAB chief executive Patricia Byron advised that from tomorrow, the PIAB's website www.piab.ie will go live and also a new Lo-Call number 1890 829 121 will be operational.

By the start of next month, claimants will be able to ring this number and receive assistance with their application.

PIAB staff will be based at a non-public office in Tallaght, Co Dublin and correspondence will be by telephone, email or written requests.
