London shares fell below the 4500 mark today as soaring oil prices compounded gloom caused by yesterday’s interest rate rise.

The FTSE 100 Index ended the day 17.8 points adrift at 4498.4 after the price of a barrel of crude hit its highest level since the Gulf war in October 1990.
