Iseq closes down 40

The Iseq index of Irish shares closed down 40.05 points to close at 5450.99 on Wednesday.

Latest Iseq entrants eircom Group plc today announced that it will release its preliminary results for the financial year ending March 31, on June 1.

Eircom finished up 1c at €1.48.

Shares in Bank of Ireland closed down 2c to €10.42.

Earlier, the company announced that it was to sell its 50% stake in EuroConex Technologies Limited for €40m to a European affiliate of NOVA Information Systems (NOVA).

In other financial news AIB was down 38c to close at €12.20 while Anglo Irish was down 2c to close at €13.65.

Shares in pharmaceutical firm Elan were down 91c to €19.55.

Elan announced today that it had completed the sale of its North American and European interests in Zonegran to Eisai Inc. for €109m.

Construction firm CRH was up 27c to close at €18.17.

Australian media group AP&N reported record profits of Aus$103.5m (€63.66m) for 2003.

Shares in Independent News and Media - which has a 40.5% share in the company - were up 3c to €2.

Ryanair began three new operations today.

Shares in the company traded down 6c to €4.85.
