O'Donoghue optimistic on tourist figures
A promising start has been made to 2004 tourism figures according to the Minister for Tourism John O'Donoghue.
Figures released today by the Central Statistics Office showed overseas visitor numbers up by more than 10% on the same two-month period last year.
While urging caution in interpreting the two month figures, the Minister said indications from both the tourism agencies and industry that 2004 was already throwing up the type of challenges and opportunities that make this sector one of the most dynamic businesses in the economy.
O' Donoghue said today: "I am keenly aware that performances like this are hard won, with enormous pressure being placed on the industry's bottom-line.
"The key to success is an unrelenting focus on maintaining competitiveness in a way that is economically sustainable for the sector."
Minister O'Donoghue also acknowledged emerging variations in the performance of certain segments and regions:
"While the level of growth may not be shared equally, either on a regional or sectoral basis, I have every confidence that 2004 will reward those who continue to deliver a memorable holiday experience at a price to suit their target market.
"With an unprecedented level of Exchequer funds available this year for tourism services (over €115m), the two tourism agencies - Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland are well placed to deliver on their ambitious target of a 4% increase in overall visitor numbers," the Minister concluded.
