Abramovich tops Britain's rich list

Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich is the richest person in Britain with a fortune of £7.5bn (€11.23bn), according to a new report.

While the Russian tycoon’s football club has yet to hit the top of the Premiership league, the 37-year-old’s billions have shot him to first place in the Sunday Times Rich List.

His vast fortune generated from shareholdings in oil, aluminium and pharmaceuticals companies has knocked the Duke of Westminster into second place on the Rich List, published tomorrow.

It makes Abramovich the sixth richest person in Europe and the 22nd richest in the world.

The secretive Russian has poured millions into Chelsea, assembling a team that is now in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The Russian qualifies for the Rich List because of his Chelsea ownership, his home in London’s Belgravia and his 440-acre Sussex estate.

Hans Rausing, the Swedish-born Tetra Pak billionaire, drops one place to third position in this year’s list.
