New Chair for Thorntons dilutes family influence

Derbyshire-based confectioner Thorntons has named Chris Burnett, 62, as executive chairman with effect from 26 April, when John Thornton will retire as executive chairman.

Burnett is currently chairman of the UK's biggest maker of concrete block paving company Marshalls. He will relinquish his role once a successor has been appointed.

The Thornton family owns about 28% of shares in the business, including John Thornton's stake of almost 6%.

John Thornton joined the business in 1966 and was chief executive from 1987 to 1995, overseeing its debut on the London Stock Exchange in 1988.

The company has two shops in Dublin, one in Limerick and Athlone and nine in Belfast.
