Gateway to close all 188 stores

Struggling US computer maker Gateway has announced it is to close all its stores by April 9.

The closing of the company's 188 stores will result in the lay-off of about 2,500 employees.

The company will continue direct consumer sales of Gateway products to consumers and businesses from its website

Gateway said it would provide more information on its strategy when it announced its first quarter financial results on April 29.

The company completely closed its Irish operations in Dublin at the end of 2001 with the loss of more than 900 jobs.
