SIPTU holding tourism to ransom, says IHF

Threatened industrial action at the nation's airports and in the public transport sector would hold the tourism industry to ransom, the Irish Hotels Federation said today.

All planned disruptions should be lifted immediately to protect Ireland's image abroad as a friendly and welcoming destination for visitors, its President Dick Bourke said today.

"SIPTU's bullying tactics in stopping rail, bus and air services simultaneously is a blatant attempt to force the Minister into a corner and to create havoc for tourists and Irish citizens alike.

"Change and reform in our transport services are absolutely essential if we are to further develop Irish tourism and continue to contribute to the economic welfare of the country," Bourke added.

Ryanair has called on an emergency plan for Dublin airport to be implemented to ensure essential services are provided and the capital's airport is kept open.
