FSAI announce February enforcement orders

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has announced details of its enforcement orders for February 2004.

Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) served four closure orders due to breaches of food safety legislation.

Two closure orders were served by EHOs in the Northern Area Health Board on Xin Yuan Restaurant, Moore Lane, Dublin 1 and Wang Wang Restaurant, Moore Street, Dublin 1.

The Southern Health Board served a Closure Order on Lynton Trailer Food Stall, Watergrasshill, Cork and the South Eastern Health Board served a Closure Order on Café Luna, Selskar Street, Waterford.

Closure Orders are served when it is deemed, upon inspection, that there is, or is likely to be, a grave and immediate danger to public health.

Peter Whelan, Director of Service Contracts, FSAI said food poisoning can occur when food businesses fail to implement basic food safety practices.

"Building up a strong client base takes years of hard work and dedication however, being implicated in a food poisoning outbreak or subject to one of these orders can wipe it out overnight.

Basic food safety skills are not difficult to master and employers are legally obliged to ensure that all staff involved in food production or preparation, must be adequately trained and/or supervised in food hygiene practices".

The FSAI recently launched Food Safety and You, a food safety induction programme which covers all aspects of basic food safety training at a cost of €250 per business.

Closure and Improvement Orders will remain listed on the FSAI website for a period of three months from the date a premises is adjudged to have corrected its food safety issue, with Prohibition Orders being listed for a period of one month.
