McDonald's to scrap supersize portions
Burger giant McDonald’s is phasing out its supersize portions in Britain, it has emerged.
The restaurant chain claimed that the supersize category represented a tiny portion of its business.
McDonald’s said it was mindful about the obesity debate in Britain but insisted that supersizing, in itself, did not cause obesity.
The company said last night in a statement: “We offer a range of portion sizes on the menu and in a limited number of restaurants this includes the choice of supersize for our customers.
“We do not advertise supersizing at a national level and supersize sales only represents a very small percentage of our business (this represents less than 0.1% of total sales).
“We review our menu on an ongoing basis to ensure our food and service experience meets our customers expectations and as such have been phasing out supersize over the last 12 months.”
The supersize portions, which are for fizzy drinks and chips, will be phased out in December, the company said.
McDonald’s is planning to add more low calorie alternatives to its menu, with the chain already offering salad, fruit and milk.
