Banking giants HBOS and Royal Bank of Scotland may be set for a bidding war for the Irish banking operations of National Australia Bank (NAB), which owns fellow Scottish bank Clydesdale.

National Australia Bank's new chief executive, John Stewart, told an Australian news network this weekend that he would not oppose a sale at the right price.
