British newspaper, the Daily Telegraph, reports that David Varney, non-executive chairman of Britain's third-largest mobile company mmO2 Plc, is to quit in the middle of next year.

City sources were quoted as saying that headhunters would soon begin a search for a successor to Varney.

Varney was appointed in advance of the company's flotation in November 2001.

Varney went part-time in his chairman role in April this year, as a result of a plan set out when mmO2 demerged from BT.
