Footsie loses early gains

London shares lost most of their gains today as US investors brushed aside upbeat economic news in favour of profit-taking.

After spending much of the day above the key 4400 barrier and advancing 27 points at one stage, the FTSE 100 Index dropped back to close 6.3 points up at 4388.7.
