SIPTU wants action on pension fund fraud

Failure to act on pension fund fraud in the construction industry will lead to industrial action, SIPTU warned today.

Failure to act on pension fund fraud in the construction industry will lead to industrial action, SIPTU warned today.

Trade union representatives earlier picketed the Department of Justice in Dublin to protest at what it termed the inaction over abuse of building workers' pension contributions.

Among the abuses within the industry listed by SIPTU were the non-registration of workers, employers under-paying pension schemes and failing to hand over deducted contributions.

The trade union has claimed that up to 60% of construction firms have failed to pass on pension contributions.

SIPTU's Dublin Construction Branch Secretary, Eric Fleming said: "We are requesting the Department of Justice to direct the Pensions Board to make an example of those employers who are defrauding building workers by taking proceedings against them.

"Building workers and their families deserve justice as much as any other group in our society."
