Australia and the United States are racing to complete a free trade deal before the issue is sidelined by next year’s US presidential elections, the government said today.

Speaking before the negotiations in Canberra this week, Australian trade minister Mark Vaile said agriculture remained a sticking point but vowed he would be using “every ounce of energy” to close negotiations by December.
