Reuters to leave Fleet Street

News firm Reuters signalled the end of an era today as it announced the company was pulling out of Fleet Street – the historic home of journalism in England.

The information agency is moving its headquarters to Canary Wharf in London’s East End in 2005 where it will consolidate its staff, saving £5m (€7.2m) annually.

Fleet Street in central London was once bustling with newspapers and their journalists notoriously propped up the bars of the area’s numerous watering holes.

A media presence will still remain in Fleet Street.

French news agency AFP retains its office, as do publishers DC Thomson, whose titles include the Dundee Courier.
