The University of Limerick has been given a key role Europe’s wireless communications research strategy.

Dr Máirtín Ó Droma, a noted telecommunications engineering expert at UL and leader in wireless research, will head up one of the five sections of a European virtual centre of research excellence which the EU plans to establish though an €8m project called TARGET.

More than 50 top European research centres and laboratories will integrate their research facilities and groups through this network.

It will combine the strengths and skills of more than 200 internationally-renowned researchers into a centre of excellence.

The strategy is aimed at overcoming the fragmented and scattered nature of European research efforts and resources in this field.
