British Prime Minister Tony Blair refused to confirm whether he had ruled out a referendum on joining the euro.

He was challenged by Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith in the British House of Commons, and would only stress the importance of keeping the option of euro membership open, providing it is in Britain's economic interests.
