Sweden moving towards euro 'no' vote
The Swedish government’s attempts to boost support for adopting the euro are not working, opinion polls asserted today, four days ahead of a national referendum.
Euro opponents maintained solid leads in three separate surveys.
The Gallup poll showed 47% would reject the common currency used by 12 other members of the European Union. Only 35% wanted the euro.
Two other polls found the no-side ahead 48-39%.
The daily polling, and the negative results they have forecast, have done nothing to dampen the pro-euro contingent’s push to convince voters ahead of the Sunday’s referendum.
Supporters are out in force, handing out buttons that say “ja” and trumpeting the merits of Swedish use of the euro.
Prime Minister Goeran Persson said the yes-side would gain votes among the ranks of undecided voters. He predicted a close result.
