The Government has decided that more competition is required to tackle Ireland's high inflation.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting in Dublin yesterday, Transport Minister Seamus Brennan said the Fianna Fail-Progressive Democrats coalition would be examining measures in several sectors in an effort to halt relentless price rises.

He said: "Inflation is the number one enemy and we have to get to grips with it."
