Retail stocks emerged from a hectic week on the front foot today as the FTSE 100 Index climbed back towards the key 4,000 barrier.

A clutch of high street names rose on hopes of a better-than-expected Christmas trading season, while the prospect of a possible bidding war for supermarket chain Safeway also attracted investors.
