Cox welcomes Turkey deal as 'significant'

European Parliament president Pat Cox welcomed as a "significant rendezvous" the agreement of EU leaders to assess in December 2004 whether Turkey has met the conditions for opening talks on EU membership.

The EU will make the decision on the basis of a European Commission review on Turkey's progress on democracy and human rights.
